about

Stereo Soundscape Composition (2012)

Three Returns is a part of the Three Cities Project and uses the sound recordings collected from three cities, Aberdeen, Bergen, and St. Petersburg.

The premise of this two-year long project is that we experience a place not only by being there physically, but also through the experience of others as well as by conjuring up an imaginary place. As such, the sense of place is a multi-layered experience where the role of remembering and imagining is as much important as that of lived experience of now. Toward this end, the project was designed in such a way that two composers travel to one of the three cities and experience the being-there while the other composer has to rely on the experience of the others, which forces him to employ imagination freely in re-live the place.

Three Returns is the composer's revisit to the sound materials, some of which he collected and some of which others did. Through the revisit, the composer wanted to become sensitive to what he has experienced, remembered, forgotten, and imagined. Particularly, based on the design of the project, the composer did not travel to St. Petersburg and had to rely on others’ experience to know the city. To the composer, Three Returns is evidence of both the fragility of our memory and fascination of place--the very reason for which place haunts us.
